History of Gambit Chess Club

Gambit Chess Club was founded in 1967 in the Blue Bell Public House in the centre of Nottingham.

For a short time it was based in the News House on St James Street and then the Old Angel Public House on Stoney Street. In the early 1970’s the club relocated to the Federation House Social Club, Claremont Road, Nottingham, where it has remained ever since.

In 2001 Gambit and Dark Horses Chess clubs merged under the Gambit name.

Players who have played for the club and have gone on to become extremely strong players include Jonathan Parker, who is now a Grand Master but who played board one for our first team when he was still at school!
